Help Needed: Reading Tutors
Would you consider becoming a reading tutor starting in the fall? If you have time available during the school day, enjoy working with children, and are looking for a way to make a lasting difference, this could be the perfect volunteer opportunity.
Nearby St. Catherine School at 51st and Center is looking for volunteer tutors to help students who are struggling with reading. Each tutor will be assigned to a classroom, working with the same students throughout the school year so that meaningful relationships can develop. Because it takes time to make a real difference, tutors will be asked to commit three hours a week, typically providing one-on-one, 30-minute coaching sessions to five students each.
Parishioner Anne Curley, a reading tutor assigned to the school’s third grade this school year, said her weekly stint at St. Catherine’s flies by. “The students I work with love the individual attention and clearly want to learn. They’re an absolute pleasure to work with. I walk out of the school each Tuesday feeling energized by my time with these wonderful children,” she said.
For those interested in learning more, an informational session will be held at the school on Monday, June 11 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. For those who sign on, training, teaching aids, and ongoing support will be provided. To indicate your interest, please call Anne at 262-785-9300.
