To combat our tendency toward consumption, we hear about the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. We’re going to consider a 4th R that could be the first and most important: REFUSE.
Think about the ways we can refuse: Refuse to buy in to our consumer culture full of gimmicks and advertisements that promise happiness with more things. Refuse to use stuff as a way to show love. Refuse to accept shopping as a leisure time activity. Refuse to fall prey to impulse buying; if it seems like something you really want or need, think about it for 24 hours rather than buying on the spot.
This week, take the 4 R’s pledge. Fill out a Pledge sheet found in the pew or in the back of church. Choose how you – kids and adults - might take more action in your own life to care for our earth. Commit to yourself and your fellow parishioners by keeping one sheet at home to remind you and return another to our display at the back of church.
