I had a powerful, reflective moment yesterday. There was a Liturgy Commission meeting last evening; in preparation, I reviewed the minutes from our last meeting, which was on March 9th – a week, more or less, before the lockdown. It was surreal to read what we had planned: services for Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday; the church environment; and so on. None of it happened! None of us could have imagined what the next 7 months would bring.
I think there was an underlying assumption, back then, that we were in charge of what would happen. I had a different feeling last night: so many of our decisions were provisional, based on what restrictions will be in place, when we get to that point. It was clear to me that we did not have as much control as we THOUGHT we did in March. Is this a valuable reminder to us from this pandemic? I will be pondering that for these next few days.
Have a good day and be safe. God bless.
